  3. My brother in law is a general contractor and I design and build websites and custom database software systems. We are both amazed at how much the process of building a house and creating a software system are so similar.

    If it's done wrong then you'll have problems. There is a process that you need to go through, and if you don't follow a logical sequence of tasks then you're sure to have problems. For example, would you lay the carpet into a new house before the plumbing is completed or the walls have been painted?

    I hear a lot of horror stories, and have done sites for companies just after they have had a new site built. The new site had so many problems that they'd never get performance out of it. There are so many factors that affect success today like:
    * usability
    * page load time
    * content that is beneficial to the reader not all about what the company is about
    * response-oriented content prompting visitors to contact the company
    * an appropriate aesthetic
    * error-free code
